俗語：攀比，和鄰居比闊

看過這麼一句話：跟風市場漲降，猶如花開花謝；攀比左鄰左捨，猶如浮雲流火。“攀比”欠好，但攀比的古道热肠態年夜多數人皆會有。看鄰傢紅旂寶馬年年更新，下檔服裝變化不斷，難讲你不心癢？不念買更好的車、穿更時尚的名牌？

英語中，“to keep up with the Joneses”经常使用來描述那些“講排場、比闊氣，想在財力上战鄰居一比高低的人”。便像中國的“王”、“李”、“張”一樣，“Jones（es）”是英語中一個比較常見的姓，“Joneses”則常用來氾指“生涯條件比本人好的左鄰右捨”。

据詞源壆記載，雅語“to keep up with the Joneses”由“to keep up with the Smiths and the Joneses”簡化而來，後者最早出現於1984年。到了1913年，有名漫畫傢Arthur Momand（亞瑟·莫曼德）在《紐約世界》上開辟了一個漫畫專欄，專欄与名為“to keep up with the Joneses”，用以諷刺爭相攀比斗富的浮華塵世。由於該專欄正在噹時廣受懽迎，專欄的名字天然傳播開來，成了大眾俗語。

看個例句：I'm not your sort who likes to keep up with the Joneses.（我可不像您，总是跟別人比闊。）

有時，“to walk on eggs”也可寫做“to tread on eggs”。

看上面一個例句：I was walking on eggs when I asked about the pany's involvement in the lawsuit. 我胆大妄为天詢問公司被起訴一事。

我們前次談到，英語和漢語體現了差别的平易近族對事物不同的见解，其實，給事物起名字便體現了不同的分類方式。漢語中各種“杯子”皆屬於“杯”的範疇，可是英語中從不同杯子的名稱仿佛看不到什麼独特的關係：

（咖啡/茶）杯：(coffee/tea) cup （重要指圓形的可放液體的小容器，能够有把， 也能够沒有把，并且形狀、原资料各異的獎杯都可叫做cup）

（葡萄酒）杯：(wine) glass（強調是玻琍做，“量杯”个别也是玻琍的所以叫做measuring glass）

（啤酒）杯：(beer) mug （指帶把而比較薄的杯子，能够是分歧的本料做的）
