AS YOU know, the general election left no party able to mand a majority in the House of mons.

I said I would do all that I could to ensure a strong, stable and principled government was formed, able to tackle Britain's economic and political challenges effectively.

My constitutional duty is to make sure that a government can be formed following last Thursday's general election.

I have informed the Queen's private secretary that it's my intention to tender my resignation to the Queen.
我已告诉女王的俬人祕書，我想向她提交辭呈。
In the event that the Queen accepts, I shall advise her to invite the leader of the opposition to form a government. I wish the next prime minister well as he makes the important choices for the future.
假如女王接收我的辭呈，我將建議她邀請反對黨領導人組建政府。我祝未來首相好運，果為他將為已來作出主要的選擇。
Only those who have held the office of prime minister can understand the full weight of its responsibilities and its great capacity for good. I have been privileged to learn much about the very best in human nature, and a fair amount too about its frailties, including my own.

Above all, it was a privilege to serve. And, yes, I loved the job, not for its prestige, its title and its ceremony, which I do not love at all. No, I loved thisjob for its potential, to make this country I love fairer, more tolerant, more green, more democratic, more prosperous and more just 翻 truly a greater Britain.
起首，為國平易近服務是我的榮倖。是的，我愛這份工作，不是因為它所帶來的特權、頭啣、儀式，我基本不愛這些。不，我愛這份工作是因為它的潛力，使我所愛的國傢更為公正、更寬容、更平易近主、更繁榮、更為正義，使其实的成為一個更為偉大的英國。
In the face of many challenges in a few short years, challenges up to and including the global financial meltdown, I have always strived to serve, to do my best in the interests of Britain, its values and its people.

And let me add one thing also.

I will always admire the courage I have seen in our armed forces. And now that the political season is over, let me stress that having shaken their hands and looked into their eyes, our troops represent all that is best in our country, and I will never forget all those who have died in honour and whose families today live in grief.

Here are some facts about Brown:
* Brown, 59, became prime minister in June 20 when Tony Blair stepped down after 10 years in power and three straight general election victories.
* Before taking the top job, Brown had been Britain's longest-serving finance minister in 200 years. His first act on being chancellor in 1997 was to hand independence to the Bank of England, putting it in charge of setting interest rates.
* Born in Scotland in 1951, Brown is the second of three sons. His father was a minister in the Church of Scotland. Brown has described his parents as "my inspiration, and the reason I am in politics".
* He lost the sight in one eye in a rugby accident when he was a teenager. Brown dismissed suggestions last year that he was slowly losing sight in his other eye.
* He went to Edinburgh University at the age of 15, one of the institution's youngest students.
* Brown confirmed in an interview in February that he and Blair had agreed that Blair would seek the party leadership in 1994 and then stand down "at some point" and support Brown for the leadership.
* The pair clashed over public service reforms and over Blair's ambition to take Britain into the euro, which Brown effectively thwarted by setting out five economic criteria that Britain had to meet before joining.
* Relations between the two men deteriorated over Blair's reluctance to step aside and hand Brown the premiership.
* Brown's first child, Jennifer Jane, with his wife Sarah died 10 days after her premature birth in 2001. The couple have since had two sons, the second of whom has been diagnosed with cystic fibrosis.
